Bleating Heart Haven

You might remember me: Cindy Ellenbecker; I wrote a few columns for the MKG’s newsletter last year entitled, “Fiber Farmin’”. My wonderful man and I own and operate Bleating Heart Haven Farm and Fiber Arts Shop at W1993 Thede Road, New Holstein, WI, a scenic two hour drive north of Madison. It was quite the “hot” summer for us. In June we lost our barn and angora bunnies to a barn fire. Thankfully, our alpacas, angora goats, and sheep were saved. But, the fiber animals had a rough summer without any shelter, although they did have trees for shade. Our pampered lot had to live like real animals for the first time ever instead of being in the cool stone interior of a lower level of the old barn with fans running 24/7.

Although heartsick about losing an icon, the old red dairy barn, we decided to rebuild. So, it’s no big surprise that we spent our summer clearing debris, getting estimates, and preparing the building site. The exterior of the new barn was just completed in September and we’re working nights and weekends to finish the interior in time for winter. Alice in Dairyland, Rochelle Ripp, will christen our new barn (with goat milk, what else?) on Saturday, November 17 to kick off our Home Spun Holiday Event from 1-5p.m. Eight other artists will be on hand to offer their work and help you with holiday shopping ideas. Of course, our shop will be open with yarn, gifts, and homemade Christmas decorations. A local coffee shop will also be on the farm offering scrumptious hot beverages. There will also be a photographer on the grounds for photo opportunities for your Christmas cards!

We pride ourselves on selling ONLY fiber from our animals. Every trip to our 1200 square foot yarn shop on the farm includes a visit to the barn or pasture to meet and pet the animals from which all fiber in the store comes from. We have 25 Angora goats (mohair source), 25 sheep (Shetlands, Cormos, CVMs, BFLs and colored Merinos), 5 alpacas, and 4 German Angora bunnies, a fat dog and several rotund cats–all spoiled! We have a genuine cottage industry: John shears the animals, Cindy washes the fibers, John cards the fibers, Cindy dyes the fibers . . . but we do rely on mini-mills for some of the spinning since both of us work full-time “off- the- farm” jobs.

Bleating Heart Haven Fiber Arts shop also offers a variety of classes in all fiber arts mediums: spinning, knitting, weaving, basket-making, felting, and willow chair construction. If there’s a fiber arts skill that you’re interested in, let us know and we’ll put together a class for you. The shop is every weekend from 10 a.m. – 3p.m. through Christmas beginning November 17 (call if you are coming to the area, and if we’re home, we’ll open up for you). In addition to luscious yarns, the shop offers roving, fleeces, continuous strand looms, knitting needles and notions, and finished knitted and woven items for sale. Each May, Fiber Facets: Art Fair on the Farm celebrates fibers and local artists. This year May 18 & 19, 2013 there will 25 artists, musical entertainment each day, food and beverage available, and spring babies waiting to be cuddled, shearing demonstrations, AND a photographer to capture your experience.
